MySQL
Beginning January 2000, Room101 took
the strategic decision to base future database driven websites
around the increasingly popular "MySQL" relational database management
system. This open source software has rapidly gained widespread
acceptance in the industry, through its unrivaled levels of performance
(it is many times faster than the industry heavyweight systems),
its ability to cope with extremely large databases (up to around
18 million records), and its adherence to well established industry
standards like Unix, ANSI SQL and TCP/IP.
Perl
Larry Wall's Practical Extration and Report Language has been widely
used for many years, and continues to be the most flexible web programming language (although not
necessarily the easiest to use!). Our choice of PERL means that any program code we write is
compatible with the widest range of web servers (more or less any Unix web server will come with
PERL as standard, and UNix accounts for upwards of 70% of all web servers).
PHP
PHP is rapidly gaining acceptance amongst the website development community, due to its ease of use.
Compatible with both Windows and Unix web servers, PHP combines some of PERL's syntax with some of the
benefits of Microsoft's ASP scripting language. Although Room101 does not program in PHP, we offer it
to our clients by popular request.
Linux
When Linus Torvalds first posted on an internet Newsgroup about his prototype "Linux" kernel in the early
90s, he little realised what a revolution would thereby be started! Releasing the true power of ordinary
PCs by coupling them with the formidable Unix architecture, Linux has developed from an enthusiast project
to a global force to be reckoned with.
